About Mango

Mango, where the seed was planted.

Mango came into being on October 30, 2006 as the first true low cost airline in South Africa. Our mandate was, is and always will be to make air travel more accessible to the millions of South Africans who up ‘till now have never been able to fly.

Mango’s first flight took to the skies on November 15, 2006. It was obviously what people had been waiting for as, during the first ten minutes of going live, our website recorded a record 15 000 booking requests!

Over the last 6 months, Mango has entrenched its leadership status by pioneering a number of innovative special offers such as a R1 fare and an immensely successful daily lunchtime Happy Hour during June.

In fact, since our first flight, Mango has become a firm favourite amongst South African travelers across all race, age and income groups. At present, we fly 4 eco-friendly new-generation Boeing 737-800’s between Joburg and Cape Town, Durbs and Cape Town, Joburg and Durbs and Bloem and Cape Town.

Already the pick of the crop!

Just a year old, and already we’ve picked up a bushel sought after travel awards, both locally and internationally. Most recently the title ofAfrica’s Best Budget Airline” fell into our laps at the World Travel Awards in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, but we also top the Travel and Tourism category of this year’s PRISM awards.

It takes a few to Mango

As a group of people, as an airline and first and foremost, as a South African company; Mango is committed to uplifting the lives of all in this great nation of ours. From time to time we try to identify a need and do something positive and practical about answering it. We’d like to believe our ongoing outreach endeavours have made a some kind of real difference to people’s lives, but because we’re not in the business of blowing our own trumpets (flying people backwards and forwards xxx times a week is challenging enough); we thought we’d let the recipients of our charity speak for themselves:

Morning,

I want to thank you so much for giving these kids the most AWESOME day. They loved every moment and almost everything they did was a brand new experience for them. I wish that I could have recorded each and every kid's every comment. I am going to write down as many as I can because those things are so precious. One of my favorite moments was when the flight from Cape Town took off and there were uncontrollable screeches of excitement, this was the sound of just not knowing what else to do. Then the giggles of the other passengers as they were so excited to experience this with these children. It is something that it hard to explain and sadly impossible to photograph.

The zoo was amazing, these kids have never been so close to such huge animals and they could not believe the size of the giraffe (especially his really long tongue). The lady who took us round the animals at the zoo was incredible, if she ever wants to move to Cape Town we would love to employ her to work with these kids! The cable car was a real hit too, again I wish that I could have ridden with each and every child. For some this was a far more scary experience than the flight! It was a great way to see all the other animals that we could not get around to seeing up close and personal.

Many children told me that this has been their best day ever. A few told me that the now knew for sure that they wanted to become pilots, this is the way that dreams start and you never know where it will go from there! I know that this was a day that will never be forgotten. We are planning on having an evening where we get all the children and parents together to show them all the pictures that were taken.

Thank you so, so, so much for allowing these child this most amazing experience.

Thanks again, it was AWESOME!
